After the success of the 2018 Heads gathering in Milan, the 2019 Inspired Africa Heads conference gathered at Reddam House Constantia in Cape Town in May 2019. With Table Mountain as a backdrop, Heads from the twelve Reddam and Reddford schools across South Africa, along with Heads from the two Brookhouse Schools in Kenya, came together to share best practices and explore what it means to be part of the exciting global network of leading schools in the Inspired Group.
Nadim M. Nsouli, Founder, Chairman and CEO, opened the conference by outlining the Inspired journey thus far - tracing the phenomenal growth of the Group (now 51 schools on five continents) over the past six years. The subsequent sequence of keynote speakers and workshop sessions allowed delegates to focus on a diverse range of topics, threaded together by the unique 'glocal' potential that Inspired offers, celebrating the local individual strength and unique character of each school, while embracing the unifying elements that mark Inspired's global educational footprint. The conference encouraged Heads to share their collective experience and expertise among themselves and with representatives of the Inspired leadership.
In welcoming the delegates to the conference, Reddam House Western Cape MD, Sheena Crawford-Kempster, emphasised the deep roots that Inspired has in South Africa. Global Education Director, Dr Stephen Spurr, encouraged Heads to view the 'glocal' approach as a significant moment of opportunity for professional growth and international best practice. Other key presentations included workshops on Health and Safety, enrolment strategies and a presentation by Inspired President, Graeme Crawford, on the Inspired philosophy.
A highlight of the conference was the presentation by well-known Carte Blanche media presenter Les Aupiais, who guided Heads in their understanding of how schools can navigate the world of the media and social media.
All Heads returned home with a much greater sense of belonging to a unified Group and a clear understanding of the overall strategy of Inspired - and their key role in supporting and developing both.
Gatherings of this nature are particularly valuable for the concrete takeaways that allow Heads to bring improvement to their schools. Since the conference, a number of initiatives are being implemented, including a coordinated professional development calendar that will incorporate expertise across the Inspired schools in South Africa.
And not content to merely have Table Mountain as a backdrop, our very own Group Education Director, Dr. Stephen Spurr, decided to conquer the very same mountain after the conference, embodying the conference ideals of exploration, new perspectives and glocal contexts. Not to mention, inspiring all attendees to push their own personal limits!
